"If there is among you anyone in need, a member of your community… do not be hardhearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbor." Deuteronomy 15:7
First Baptist Church Morganton is dedicated to involving all members in numerous and varied mission activities. Members, individually and in groups, share God’s love and salvation, while ministering to the physical, social, and emotional needs of others. Some mission activities involve long-term, on-going projects; others are short-term directed at meeting specific, immediate needs. Women and Men United in Missions (WMUM), First Baptist Church’s mission organization, provides structure and oversight for mission initiatives and responses.

Women and Men United in Missions (WMUM)
WMUM is composed of women, men, young people and children actively responding to the Great Commission. Members work in partnership to promote prayer for missions, missions education, support of missions, and participation in mission projects. Mission concerns include the immediate community, North Carolina, the United States of America and the world. Mission work is done cooperatively with the Catawba River Baptist Association, the North Carolina Baptist State Convention, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Southern Baptist Convention and other mission groups as deemed appropriate.
WMUM has six focus groups that coordinate mission activities and events for the entire church:
Prayer and Affirmation promotes prayer as an integral part of all mission activities. Areas of involvement include: intercessory prayer ministry, monthly prayer gatherings, men’s and women’s prayer retreats, and prayer vigils.
Programs and Promotion plans and coordinates special WMUM celebrations and programs throughout the year. Areas of involvement include: organizing mission fairs, mission programs, celebrations and fund raisers, and promotion of offerings for national and global missions.
Children and Youth plans and coordinates mission programs with children and youth. Areas of involvement include: weekly missions education program, special mission studies, and mission projects and trips. This mission group supports the Youth Ministries Committee in planning and implementing activities such as youth mission trips and summer backyard Bible clubs for children in the local community.
Local Missions initiates and coordinates mission activities in Morganton and Burke County. Areas of involvement include: Burke United Christian Ministries, Habitat for Humanity, Handiwork Ministry, Catawba River Baptist Association mission projects, Christmas Cheer, and the Good Samaritan Clinic. The Local Missions group sponsors an all day missions event each September called Mission Morganton. Read testimonies of Mission Morganton 2008 workers by clicking here.
A coordinating team spends many months determining important ministry opportunities and securing volunteers for each project. The team seeks to mobilize the entire church family in some capacity. Projects for this Saturday missions experience include:
- holding a yard sale with proceeds going to local ministries in the community,
- taking gifts and visiting residents of nursing homes,
- sponsoring a day camp in a public housing area,
- sorting and bagging toiletry items for inmates at local prisons,
- landscaping and other projects at elementary schools, public housing, and agencies such as Options and Hospice,
- doing home improvement projects for elderly, needy and handicapped residents,
- assisting Burke United Christian ministries with food distribution and clothes sorting,
- sewing Christmas stockings for the Catawba River Baptist Association “Toy Store” for needy children,
- collecting, cleaning, and sorting toys for Christmas Cheer, and
- distributing thousands of Jesus videos throughout the county.
Mission Morganton participants meet together the next day for a fellowship breakfast before Sunday School. Representatives from the work groups share how the work went, give testimonies, and with grateful hearts thank the Lord for allowing this special day of ministry.
United States Missions initiates and coordinates mission activities in North Carolina and across the United States. Areas of involvement include: affirmation and support for the Bradshaw Mountain Community Church in Paynesville, West Virginia, the Spanish Baptist Church in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Alaska Baptist Convention, disaster relief to flood ravaged eastern North Carolina, the Jesus Video Project in western North Carolina, and youth mission trips to Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York, and the nation’s capital.
Global Missions initiates and coordinates mission activities throughout the world. Areas of involvement include: affirmation and support for a sister church in Brannockstown, Republic of Ireland, and for missionaries and local ministers serving in France, Romania, Italy, and South Africa. The Global Missions group also supports special drives for world crises such as hurricane or earthquake disasters and provides affirmation and support of mission trips made by individual church members.
