Covid-19 Update: May 18, 2021

From Our Reopening Task Force

Mask Requirement Ended for Most

After studying renewed Guidelines from the CDC and from the state of NC, and after taking a survey of worshipers in attendance this past Sunday, May 23, our Reopening Task Force has decided to drop the longstanding mask mandate for most participants in worship, Sunday School, committee meetings, and other church activities.

The survey revealed that 91% of attendees last Sunday had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  The Task Force has determined that, by far, 91% is a high enough percentage to justify eliminating masks for most adults in worship services and other church meetings and functions, effective immediately.

The Task Force strongly encourages adult attendees who have not been fully vaccinated, along with people who have compromised immune systems, to continue wearing masks in worship, Sunday School, and other church meetings and activities.  Additionally, the Task Force urges every adult, even if fully vaccinated, to continue to wear a mask if that person feels safer doing so.

At this point, this change in policy does NOT apply to children and youth.  The Task Force will continue weekly to evaluate information from the CDC and other medical sources, but as of right now the Task Force asks that all children, youth, and those who teach children’s or youth Sunday School classes continue to wear masks for all church functions.  The Task Force is aware that a number of our youth and older children are in the process of being vaccinated, and the hope is that this requirement can be altered, or dropped, in the near future.

Our First Baptist Preschool/Afterschool Ministry must also continue to abide by state mandates requiring mask-wearing and other precautions.  Additionally, anyone who enters the Preschool or Afterschool areas during school hours during the week is required to wear a mask.

On behalf of our entire church family, I wish to thank the members of our Task Force (Sandy Baden, Steve Bailey, Alan LeCroy, and Jane Moody), who have worked so hard to get us safely to this point!  I am grateful also to Dr. Jim Baden, Dr. John Whalley, and several other medical professionals and other folk who have provided the Task Force and others of us with expert counsel at various points in this challenging process.  Finally, I thank each of our church members and regular visitors for your ongoing cooperation!
